We were invited by Dharma Buddhism Association to perform a demonstration on German longsword swordsmanship. It was probably the first demonstration narrated in Chinese / Cantonese about this subject in the world. Lancelot Chan, Unicorn Poh and Zachary Au Yeung showed the effectiveness of German style longsword fighting to 40 attendees.

As a response to some swordsmanship practitioners who concentrate on delivering hard blows, here we made a video to investigate how hard one has to hit in order to inflict effective damage in unarmored combat and the difficulty in crashing through opponent's defense with hard blows.

Tom wore his steel gorget and gauntlets, thus hits to his neck and hands in the sparring were not counted. Lancelot wielded his Brescia Spadona RSW in German Sigmund Ringeck style to spar against Tom and his Brescia Spadona RSW as well as the combination of sword and shield .

Real Sword Test Cutting
(All swords used in test cutting are real swords, not Realistic Sparring Weapons.)

Tai Chi Master Kie Brooks tested 3 different Chinese Jian out on thin and thick water bottles, which resulted in huge differences. He emphasized the importance of having a good sword as well as cutting practice in Chinese martial arts with his action.

A precious experimental video of putting the sparring moves to test in real sword test cutting. Since pork arm was tougher than human arm and was placed on a box with certain give, the actual damage inflicted on a human body would be greater than the ones shown in the video.

Lancelot test cut a pork arm with a
European Bastard Sword,
a real one of course. From time to time we test cut with real swords to
appreciate the actual effect of a sword on flesh, meat, and bone and to
verify the effectiveness of certain sparring techniques. Here's the latest
one in which the pork arm was placed on a cardboard box to provide some
amount of give during impact to simulate the resistance one might encounter
in combat situation.
